1 With news in England of the gas attack at St. Julien, 22 April 1915, Raymond’s letters contain reassurances that he had not encountered gas. In typical style the relative merits of various preventatives such as soda or ammonia were discussed.

2 Many of the dead were casualties of gas attacks on 1 and 5 May. ‘Special sprayers for use in driving gas out of trenches, together with a special solution’ were issued to the battalion. On 12 May their war diary notes: ‘The faces of the dead soldiers who were buried by our men were quite black and all metal work of their equipment was covered by a heavy green substance.’
